We were given a shape each - mine was circle - and from this, I have to go around the university and take photographs of circles. These were going to be used to create postcards.
Original Photo's
When we got to the photoshop session, we were told that the images must work in a set, so I decided to stick with the fire extinguishers because they are not obviously circles from certain angles, and are quite interesting as they are not just a simple circle like a clock.
Edited Photo's
From these eight pictures I am going to create the five postcards.
I did some initial research into postcards & graphic design postcards: Research
From the images I edited, I started playing around with them on photoshop, trying to come up with a few different variations of the images that would work in a set and not be too repetitive.
Variations:
As I had already edited the photo's to the state I wanted them in, I didn't need to do any of that, so started with simple position variations:
I then looked at a few filters to see if I could add to the images and make them more interesting to look at than the originals:
Sepia - no luminosity preserved |
Sepia - luminosity preserved |
Red - no luminosity preserved |
Red - luminosity preserved |
Cyan - luminosity preserved |
Underwater - no luminosity preserved |
Black & White |
Black & White - reds lighter |
Vibrance lowered |
From these variations, I took the five that I liked the most and created five different sets. From here I can now choose which set I think will work the best & can design the back.
From these sets, I think set 1, 3 & 4 are the most visually interesting. I think number 2 is a bit too repetitive, and even though set 3 is the same images, I have rotated them to make them not in the obvious position, so think it works a lot better. Set 1 keeps the bright red, but adds the sepia tone in to give the background more of a presence and make it a balanced image overall. Set 5 is exactly the same, but with a red tone instead of the sepia.
The only issue I had was the fact that I did not have a sufficient amount of photographs of the fire extinguishers so went around and got a few more:
From these images I generated a few more sets of what I could do:
Looking over the 8 sets as a whole, I have decided that set 6 is the most interesting & the one that I like the most. These will become my final 5 postcards.
I am now going to look into the design for the back. As I have to do everything on Photoshop, it makes what I can do quite limited as it is not a program for designing, more for photo manipulation and editing. I can either take a section of an image and use this, or I can use the images of the whole extinguisher (set 8).
Final 5:
