OUGD405 - Product (2)

Rationale & Feedback

After looking at the magazine layouts by various magazines, I thought of a few ideas as to how to present it/how it will work.
Magazine layout design
Initial ideas were to maybe have something that folded out to reveal all the information, but I started to consider how breakable that would be as a publication and how well it would actually work. Because of this, I decided to stick with a normal magazine layout, in the A5 size.

Feedback points

One of the main aspects of the magazine is the posters which will be inside it. To keep it current, these posters will be of the nine films nominated for the best motion picture at the Academy Awards.

Oscar nominated films for best motion picture:

I want the magazine to flow completely, including the posters inside, to make them look like they're part of the magazine and not just film posters. To do this I have decided to base the whole magazine in the style of Saul Bass.
Bass mainly used block colours to create posters which really stood out. They were simple and got the message across without overcomplicating the imagery and text. Taking Bass's influence, I will be recreating the nine posters above in the same sort of style, using a limited amount of colour and only using block colours, and no realistic style images.

Django Unchained

Les Miserables

Silver Linings Playbook

Life of Pi

Argo

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Zero Dark Thirty

Lincoln

Amour

The hardest part of creating these posters was that I had to try get the same message/feeling across as in the originals. This was particularly hard for a couple (Amour & Beasts of the Southern Wild) as these are two films I have heard nothing about, and the posters don't really give much about the story away. However, in the end I think I have made a strong set of posters.
