OUGD503 - Studio Brief 2: Session 1

In this session we started by taking the three chosen briefs and writing down the pro's and con's to them. We had four briefs between us as we had discussed them, bringing an extra because Daisy is planning on doing the Kath Kidston brief herself as well.
Our briefs were:

  • The British Council
  • Kath Kidston

  • Oasis

  • The Royal Albert Hall
The British Council
Pro's
  • A lot of resources
  • A lot of scope for design work
Con's
  • Has to be bilingual - English & Russian
  • A lot of work needs to be done
  • The brief asks for work in film - neither of us have done this properly before
  • Would have to print it out to photograph it properly - it would be costly
Kath Kidston

Pro's
  • Simple outcome - the brief is very straight forward
  • A lot of scope - a lot can be done to further this
  • Can be all digital - no need for printing it
  • They know exactly what they want
Con's
  • Very specific audience
  • Perhaps too small of a brief to do in a collaboration

Oasis

Pro's
  • Open brief - they don't specify exactly what they want so we can design what we please to fulfil the brief
  • Friendly tone of voice
  • Cross media - they're asking for it to be over a wide range - gives us a lot to work with
  • Potential to twist the brief from just messages into a advertising campaign
  • Can be all digital
Con's
  • Oasis seem to be a little deluded into their brand identity - what they see themselves is not how anyone else seems to see them
  • Neither of us have does interior design before/way finding systems etc.

Royal Albert Hall

Pro's
  • For Charity
  • A fair bit of work to do
Con's

  • A lot of research will be needed - they ask for stories to be told through the campaign
After doing this exercise we mutually decided that the only brief we were considering to do was the Oasis one as we had quite a lot of initial ideas of how we could go about it and it would be best suited to our skills.

We were then given the collaboration partner form again with two columns for us to fill in. This would act as a sort of contract for the hole of the collaboration and what we wrote down on it would be what we would have to stick to and fulfil.
Initially we found this very hard to do because the questions asked needed our concept to be thought about. As we had around forty five minutes to fill in this sheet and have a break, we did a quick mind map of the very initial ideas we had for the brief and began deciding a few of the design decisions in terms of who would be doing what.
We immediately decided that we wanted to do it as some kind of campaign which expands outside the store and what they have suggested. The initial brief literally asks for some messages to be re-written and in-store, but we wanted to do it on a much larger scale with more collateral than asked for.
What we have both agreed on is that to do this brief we are essentially redesigning the branding for Oasis. How they see themselves is not how it is put across to the public, so going by what they think, we want to use this and create branding around this. This would include doing the in-store messages, and taking these out into advertising posters etc. As well as this we discussed the idea of redesigning the gift cards & loyalty cards, and creating print collateral such as leaflets or a mini publication of some sort. Oasis seem to be quite big on the internet, so we would also like to incorporate the designs to online. We would also like it to be a mix of type and image instead of just type like the brief starts with.
We decided that I would work with the typography work and Daisy would work with image, and we would work together in putting everything together and choosing the overall aesthetic look of the work. We have also decided that if we do web-based work, I will be doing that as I am more confident in this area.
In terms of non-design related skills, it was decided that I will time-manage and keep us on track, while Daisy would be the one to talk to people if necessary.
At this point it is hard to agree on a larger amount of things as we haven't really done any work on the brief.
The task to complete for next week is to have this sheet filled in and typed up properly and have our initial ideas.
We have decided to work on this on Tuesday so we have a few days to think about initial ideas before coming together with them.
